Italian rebar prices slide

Italian rebar prices are sliding again. Despite the market resuming activity following summer holidays, consumption remains modest, keeping downward pressure on values, market sources tell Kallanish.
Buyers are maintaining a wait-and-see approach, and the shortage of certain diameters that pushed prices up in July is now easing as steelmakers resumed production this month. Following the initial market reopening after August, when asking prices were at €310-320/tonne ($363-375/t), current quotes have dropped to €290/t base ex-works, with some offering at €280/t. Today, contract prices have fallen by around €10/t, hovering between €280-290/t base ex-works, depending on volumes.
A buyer in central Italy reports activity is largely driven by infrastructure projects funded through the EU post-pandemic recovery fund, while the private residential sector has remained slow for several months.
Another construction company confirms this, noting that although it has orders, it can afford to wait for prices to decline further. The firm also expresses concern about the end of subsidised projects next year, as, under the European Commission’s recovery fund rules, all allocated funds must be spent by 2026.

With size extras estimated at €260-270/t, effective rebar prices range between €540-560/t ex-works, according to market sources. Mesh prices remain mostly stable compared to the beginning of August, at an average of €290-300/t base ex-works. This does not include €300/t size extras.
