Malaysia’s new car production rises in September

Malaysia’s new car production rose 5% year-on-year to 58,413 units in September, in line with slightly higher new car sales, Kallanish notes.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said in a statement that the new car sales during the month climbed 0.2% y-o-y to 58,490 units.
However, on month-on-month basis, new car sales declined by 22% from 74,479 units in August.
The lower TIV was reduced by fewer working days in September due to several public holidays. It was also due to "wait-and-see" attitude in the market towards the 2026 National Budget announcement including details on the petrol subsidy rationalisation.
From January to September, Malaysia’s new car production fell 7% y-o-y to 552,129 units. Its new car sales for the period also slipped 3% y-o-y to 579,336 units.

MAA projects new car sales in October will surpass September's figures, driven primarily by two factors, the impending expiry of the tax exemption for imported BEVs, following the recent National Budget announcement, which is expected to boost demand through year-end, and general year-end promotional campaigns.
