Tata Steel has rolled the first coil at its Jamshedpur continuous strip production (CSP) plant following an extensive upgrade carried out by technology provider SMS group, Kallanish notes.
The Jamshedpur CSP plant, commissioned in 2011, has a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes/year. It produces strip widths of 900-1,680 mm and thicknesses from 1-16mm.
The revamp enables the plant to produce thinner strip gauges down to 1mm, while improving dimensional accuracy, flatness and overall throughput, SMS says.
The project included the integration of a new F7 finishing stand into the CSP rolling mill, as well as a full renewal of level 1 and level 2 automation systems.
The addition of the F7 stand allows rolling loads to be distributed more efficiently, particularly for harder grades at wider widths and thinner gauges. This reduces bottlenecks in the finishing mill and allows the casters to operate at an optimised casting thickness, SMS says.
As part of the upgrade, SMS also adapted the existing roll-changing equipment and modernised mill stands F1-F5. This included the installation of a new hydraulically operated pass line adjustment system.
According to SMS, the mill rolled 14 coils without cobbles on the first day after restart. By the sixth day of operation, it had successfully processed strip down to 1.2mm thickness.
SMS project manager Hendrik Trimborn says close cooperation between the two companies contributed to the rapid ramp-up.
“The open and trusting communication made it possible to identify challenges early on and to find solutions together. This very short and effective ramp-up phase exceeded the expectations of all parties involved, which impressively underlines the value of this strong partnership,” he adds.
