Spanish rebar demand remains firm

Spanish rebar prices continue to be steady, with domestic construction demand remaining strong, market sources tell Kallanish.

Merchants estimate that local rebar mills will push for further increases driven by rising scrap costs.
“We are trying to recover margins, prompted by healthy demand from the construction sector,” one seller comments.
The proportion of domestic material meeting growing consumption exceeds imports, albeit at a higher price, according to another source. “The domestic price varies depending on each negotiation, depending on delivery times, individual contractual conditions, discounts for advance purchases, etc,” a local merchant observes.
Although local supplies dominate the mix, the Spanish steel sector is closely monitoring international market movements. “Buyers are waiting for greater visibility, as uncertainty over CBAM costs is significantly affecting their plans. Protectionist measures could increase the diversion of material from large markets such as Turkey, although quotas remain at an acceptable level,” another source comments.
The Spanish rebar market is optimistic for the February-March period as it is seeing strong local demand driven mainly by residential construction. Meanwhile, large construction companies are lobbying the Spanish government for urgent modifications to public works contracts. The sector believes the failure to update prices could jeopardise the viability of projects, slowing down the execution of works and directly affecting contracting.
The level of construction activity in Spain is expected to persist for at least another two months, according to sources.
According to Spanish Chamber of Commerce data, the monthly index for Spanish domestic rebar prices (B-500 SD 12 metre/12mm) increased for an eighth consecutive month in January. The index stood at 206.87, up 1.77% over December. It was also 10.05% higher year-on-year. The index is based on a value of 100 in 2014.

Current offers for 16mm rebar in Spain are at €368-373/t ($432-437.9) base. Including €262/t size extras and loading expenses, transaction values are at €630-635/t ex-works.
