Spanish police have searched the headquarters of special steelmaker Sidenor in Basauri, the Basque Country. The action is part of an investigation by the National Court into the sale of steel to an Israeli company that manufactures military technology, Kallanish understands.
The search, carried out by order of National Court judge Francisco de Jorge, began at noon on Tuesday, and Sidenor cooperated with the authorities, according to the police.
"We supported the authorities by providing them with all the information they required with diligence and transparency," Sidenor states.
In November, the president of the company, José Antonio Jainaga, general director Marco Pineda, and commercial executive Íñigo Molero testified before the National Court as part of the investigation into alleged smuggling and complicity in a crime against humanity. Sidenor’s executives assured Judge De Jorge that the company complied with the law in the sale of steel to Israel Military Industries (IMI).
The steel company confirms it submitted an additional expert report, prepared by an independent firm, analysing the traceability of the orders placed by IMI.
The report certifies that the steel produced for this customer meets the requested characteristics and was not subject to any special controls at the time of these sales.
