Italian coil prices climb despite low consumption

Italian spot coil prices continue to increase, with some transactions now reaching €700/tonne ($814.82/t) base delivered for hot rolled coils, although demand remains subdued and purchases are limited to small volumes, market participants tell Kallanish.
While some large buyers and service centres continuing to source HRC from the import market, others remain on the fence. Several say they see little need to buy given weak downstream demand and confirm that their current needs are largely covered through annual indexed HRC contracts and some delivered-duty-paid (DDP) import purchases.
Service centres report a modest pickup in downstream activity over the past four to five days following a quiet period. Sheet prices are increasing, but market participants view the recent activity mainly as temporary restocking linked to rising prices after the escalation of the US-Iran conflict. Hot rolled sheet prices have reached around €780/t ex-works, with service centres now targeting €800/t this week, a level that sources believe will be achieved.
Uncertainty surrounding CBAM costs has reduced imports with only larger buyers continuing to purchase directly from Asian suppliers. Most service centres prefer DDP material, which is currently limited.
Recent purchases include Turkish material sold at around €540/t cif. Depending on the supplier, buyers will have to pay duties of 5% or 7% plus uncertain CBAM costs. Turkey is also reaching its quota limits. One buyer notes that material shipped in April may only clear customs on 1 July when the new safeguard regime is expected to start, making direct imports risky.
Several sources say HRC order intake remains low and expect buyers to return to the domestic sport market in April. Producers are currently asking €700-750/t base ex-works for HRC. ArcelorMittal is said to have no allocations available and remains uncompromising on higher prices, targeting €750/t base delivered in Italy. DDP material is offered at around €690-700/t, while domestic HRC contract prices are reported at €680-700/t base delivered.

Availability of cold rolled coil remains tight, while supply of hot-dipped galvanised coil is also limited. DDP CRC contracts are heard at around €780-790/t, while domestic CRC and HDG contract prices are assessed at €790-810/t base delivered.
