Gerdau launches low-emissions steel line

Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau has launched a low-emission steel product line produced with 100% scrap and renewable electricity, Kallanish reports.

The so-called Gerdau NewEco line offers decarbonising solutions for the automotive and construction sectors. Without disclosing the carbon footprint of the new products, the steelmaker notes that the emission intensity is based on methodology aligned with best practices in the global steel industry, and is audited by a third party.
Gerdau already has one of the world’s lowest emission intensities in the sector at 0.85 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of steel produced (scopes 1 and 2). By 2031, the steelmaker aims to reduce its intensity to 0.82tCO2/t. This compares with a current global average of 1.92tCO2/t steel, according to the World Steel Association.
“NewEco was developed to offer our clients a solution that will contribute to the decarbonisation of their projects, initiatives and final products, focusing on competitiveness and sustainability,” comments chief executive Gustavo Werneck.
Details on pricing and a potential premium were not disclosed.

The steelmaker currently produces around 70% of its steel using scrap. It is one of the largest metal recyclers in Central and South America, recycling roughly 10m t/y of ferrous scrap. The group owns 29 production units, 13 of which are based in North America and feature electric arc furnaces.
