Rising costs push ArcelorMittal to increases coil prices

ArcelorMittal is implementing a coil price increase of €20/tonne ($23.3/t) across Europe, according to multiple market sources.

Surging production costs driven by increases in raw materials, including coal, gas and electricity as well as CO2 are pushing the steelmaker, in line with other European steel producers, to accelerate price increases.

A mill source adds that the ongoing instability in the Middle East is keeping transport costs elevated and energy prices uncertain, leaving producers with little visibility on cost trends.

The revised base price for hot rolled coil in Southern Europe is said to be at €790/t base delivered, versus the previous €770/t, Kallanish notes. For Northern Europe the new headline offer is €770/t. The steelmaker is quoting November lead-time for HRC.

For Southern Europe, cold rolled coils are now at €920/t and €880/t for hot-dip galvanized coil for new contracts. For Northern Europe CRC is at €890/t while HDG has reached €860/t. Lead-time for CRC and HDG are said to be November and December.

The European shortage of CRC meanwhile, particularly for certain grades, is persisting, sources say. Order books at European mills are said to be well filled for the three products.

HRC transactions are expected to gradually increase from the level of €710-730/t base delivered on average seen until last month. Meanwhile, import transactions have dramatically decreased over the past months, and only the large European steel processors have continued to source material from third countries.

Coil buyers consider the new European quotas regime to be harsher than expected, with several million tonnes of duty-free imported coils erased. European buyers of flat steel products will be able to import a combined 9,607,775 tonnes of HRC, cold rolled coil and coated sheet annually (see Kallanish passim).
