Iron ore fluctuates, market awaits peak season
Seaborne iron ore prices weakened on Tuesday as spot market activity contracted.
The Kallanish KORE 61% Fe index retreated by $0.19/tonne to $97.12/dry metric tonne cfr Qingdao.
The KORE 62% Fe index, meanwhile, dipped $0.55/t to $97.23/dmt cfr. The daily spread between the KORE 61% and 62% Fe indices stood at $0.11/t.
The KORE 65% Fe index decreased by $0.35/t to $114.26/dmt cfr Qingdao.
85,000 tonnes of BRBF Fines were sold at $101.45/t with a laycan of 11-20 September, according to public platform information.
On the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), the most-traded, January 2027 iron ore contract gained by CNY 1/t ($0.15/t) to CNY 716.5/t on Tuesday.
On the Singapore Exchange, the September 61% Fe futures contract weakened by $0.29/t to $97.14/t. The 65% Fe futures contract inched lower by $0.35/t to $113.06/t. The same contract for 58% Fe futures, however, had not yet been updated late on Tuesday.
Tangshan billet remained stable at CNY 3,000/t on Tuesday.
However, expectations of improving steel margins have provided some support, following the coke price increases and resilient hot metal output.
With the traditional "September-October peak season" approaching, market participants have become more optimistic that downstream steel demand could see a marginal recovery.
