Italian plate prices flatten amid quiet April market

Italian heavy plate prices remain stable compared to early April, with demand weakening compared to March, Kallanish hears.

Producers are pushing up prices in response to increasing slab costs but rises implemented earlier in April have not yet translated into contracts.
Both mill and distributor sources report weaker consumption. A distributor tells Kallanish buyers are only procuring material to satisfy their immediate needs.
Mill lead times remain at the end of May. According to two producers, order books are well filled, and if buyers refuse to pay the level of €800/tonne ($940.99/t) ex-works for S275 grades, they will not sell.
Slab prices have risen to around $590-600/t cif Italy, and when factoring in CBAM and higher costs linked to the US-Iran conflict, producers argue that selling prices cannot remain below €800/t base if they are to preserve a modest margin.
Demand is expected to recover in May, supported by the disappearance of competitive import offers. Import volumes are seen declining sharply as July approaches and the new safeguard measures take effect.

Today contracts for S275 remain at €750-760/t base ex-works, sources suggest.
